GUIDE TO THE 4 C'S OF DIAMONDS

Every diamond tells a story, and its brilliance is shaped by four essential qualities known as the 4 C’s: clarity, color, cut, and carat. These elements determine not only the value of a diamond but also its visual impact and emotional resonance. At Hing Wa Lee Jewelers in San Gabriel and Walnut, California, we present these characteristics not as mere criteria, but as guiding principles that help our clients discover the diamond that feels destined for them. From fiery round brilliants to whisper-soft pear shapes, every stone has a soul. Let’s explore the four elements that bring out a diamond’s magic.

CLARITY: THE PURITY WITHIN

Clarity refers to the presence of natural inclusions or blemishes found within a diamond. These internal characteristics are like fingerprints, forming as the diamond crystallized beneath the Earth’s surface. Diamonds graded as “flawless” have no inclusions visible under 10x magnification, making them exceptionally rare. However, many imperfections are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye, so even diamonds with subtle inclusions remain visually striking and accessible. A diamond with excellent clarity offers stunning brilliance, especially in large or step-cut styles. With professional guidance, you can balance clarity with the other C’s for optimal sparkle and value.

COLOR: NATURE’S DIAMOND PALETTE

Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (completely colourless) to Z (noticeable yellow or brown hues). The less color a diamond has, the rarer and more valuable it typically is. Completely colorless diamonds allow the most light to pass through, enhancing brilliance and fire. Slight tints, though nearly imperceptible, can affect price and visual warmth. Some buyers prefer near-colourless diamonds that offer excellent value with minimal visual compromise. Others embrace warmer tones for their romantic character. The metal setting also influences perceived colour: platinum amplifies whiteness, while yellow gold complements warmer hues.

CUT: THE SPARKLE FACTOR

The cut is not about a diamond’s shape but how well its facets interact with light. A well-cut diamond displays dazzling brilliance, fire, and scintillation — its sparkle in motion. Even a flawless diamond will appear dull if poorly cut. The cut grade assesses proportions, symmetry, and polish, with “Excellent” and “Ideal” cuts ensuring optimal light return. Precise angles ensure light enters and reflects through the top, making the diamond appear bright and lively. Shallow or deep cuts cause light to escape, reducing sparkle. For many, cut is the most important C because it enhances every visual quality.

CARAT: THE WEIGHT OF RARITY

Last but not least, carat weight measures a diamond’s physical weight, with one carat equal to 0.2 grams. Though often associated with size, carat weight doesn’t tell the full story — a well-cut diamond can appear larger than its carat suggests. Larger diamonds are rarer, and prices rise exponentially with weight. However, two diamonds of equal carat weight may differ vastly in appearance depending on cut, color, and clarity. Experienced shoppers focus on overall balance rather than maximum size. For example, choosing just below milestone weights (like 0.90 instead of 1.00 carat) can offer better value with negligible size difference. Carat is only one aspect; brilliance and beauty depend on all four C’s.
